Minnesota Mercury Recovery Program

Convenience lighting fixtures are located in the hood and trunk of specific vehicles.

From June 2004 to May 2006, Minnesota Waste Wise operated Minnesota Mercury Recovery, a program to recover and recycle mercury switches from end-of-life vehicles. The program was a voluntary partnership of Minnesota Waste Wise, the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, the Minnesota Office of Environmental Assistance, and the Alliance of Auto Manufacturers. Minnesota Mercury Recovery aimed to provide an efficient means to recycle mercury convenience lighting switches and to avoid potentially burdensome legislative mandates.

The Minnesota Mercury Recovery program is no longer managed by Minnesota Waste Wise. In May 2006, End-of-Life Vehicle Solutions began managing the statewide program to collect and recycle mercury switches from end-of-life vehicles in Minnesota.
