WHITE BEAR LAKE — In 2016, Hallberg Engineering reached out to Ramsey County to receive guidance and expertise on creating a more green and efficient waste disposal system. Ramsey County turned the company over to its consultant, Minnesota Waste Wise, to help identify opportunities for recycling and waste reduction.
Following an onsite waste assessment, Waste Wise noted an opportunity for the company to significantly reduce trash by eliminating disposable dishware in favor of reusable dishes. With this recommendation in hand, Hallberg Engineering applied for Ramsey County’s BizRecycling grant to purchase reusable dishes for employees to use. To further reduce trash, the company also used grant funds to set up an organics recycling program for food scraps, compostable food service ware used at the company events, and other compostable products.
In less than three weeks after making these changes, trash generation at Hallberg Engineering was cut in half. They are now collecting nearly 4,200 lbs of organics recycling per year. When asked about the change, Marketing Coordinator Andrea Loppnow said, “We were concerned about having reusable dishes and moving away from paper plates. However, it has been well-received and easier than we thought. It was definitely worth the time put in.”
