MINNEAPOLIS — Managing operating costs for 38 businesses in a common space is a continual challenge for Juan Linares, Administrator at Mercado Central in Minneapolis. Linares was interested in upgrading the lighting to LED, but worried about upfront costs and finding consensus among decision makers. Energy Smart and partner Lake Street Council entered the conversation and met with the organization’s Capital Improvement Committee. “When they did,” said Linares, “they played a key role in the project moving forward.” A $3,000 Minnesota Chamber of Commerce grant was also important in helping Mercado Central become more energy efficient.
The project cost the business $26,354. They received a utility rebate of $9,777 and are estimated to save $5,669 in energy utility costs and 100,374 kWh each year.
